Graham Hall resident rooms thermostat operation

Overview/ Instructions
Graham resident rooms thermostat operation

The resident rooms in Graham Hall have individual controls for the heating and cooling via thermostats in each room.  The thermostats will have a slider or dial to change the set temperature for the room.  Please move the slider or dial towards “warm/hot” to increase the room temperature or move the slider or dial towards “cool/cold” to decrease the temperature.  Please note that opening a window in a room that is hot in attempt to cool the room may actually make the problem worse as the cool air from the window will blow on the thermostat and make it think the room is cold, thus making the heat run even more.

Each thermostat also has 2 switches on it.  The first switch has 2 positions and is labeled “On” and “Auto”.  The “On” position will make the fan run constantly to circulate air, in this position the valve that controls the heating or cooling will modulate as needed to maintain the temperature even though the fan remains on all the time.  In the “Auto” position the fan will cycle on and off with the valve for heating or cooling.

The second switch is HI, MED, LOW, this is the fan speed.  We suggest using the lowest possible setting that meets your comfort needs, but you are free to adjust this as you wish.

Part of the design of the HVAC system in Graham Hall is that the entire building switches from heating mode to cooling mode based on outdoor air temperature.  Below 55 degrees F the building will heat, above 55 degrees F the building will cool.  So, if the outdoor temperature is below 55 degrees F there will not be cooling available, and above 55 degrees F there will not be heating available.  This is not something we can change.

One design quirk with the individual units in the student rooms at Graham is that when the building switches over from heating to cooling or vice versa, some units get stuck in the wrong mode.  So if you find that your unit is not heating or cooling correctly please try moving the thermostat to full heat or full cool and leave it there for a few minutes and then try the opposite end of the range.  The unit may cycle on and off during this process.  This normally gets the unit to reset itself and go back to normal, at which time you can return the thermostat to a normal temperature level.

Additional Information

If you feel that your unit is still not heating or cooling correctly, please submit a Facilities Management service request. If you need immediate assistance contact the Facilities Management Service desk at 641-628-7676 during our hours of operation: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm.  After hours call Campus Security at 641-628-9000.
